External Advisory Committee
In 2008 a new External Advisory Committee (EAC) was convened for the undergraduate and masters program in speech pathology.
The role of the committee is to give advice and direction to the Discipline regarding the attributes of our graduates and future workplace trends that need to be accounted for in our curriculum.
If you have specific feedback you would like to give the university on either of these issues you are welcome to contact Kirrie Ballard, Head of Discipline or the EAC member most relevant. Below is a list of our EAC members and the groups they are representing.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital
Speech Pathology Department
Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is a Major Metropolitan Acute General Hospital with 454 beds, catering for approximately 27,000 inpatient separations per year. Bankstown Health Service also includes a number of community centres as part of Sydney South West Area Health.
The estimated population of SSWAHS is 1.33M in 2004 (representing 20% of the total population of NSW) with a projected increase to 1.52M by 2016. SSWAHS is the most ethnically diverse health area in Australia, with 39% of people speaking a language other than English at home, most notably in Fairfield and Canterbury, with over 60% of the population not speaking English at home.
There are considerable variations between LGAs in the proportions of the population identifying as Aboriginal (highest in South Sydney and Campbelltown)
Speech Pathology forms an integral part of the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital Allied Health Service. The Service consists of both a Hospital team and the Stuttering Unit.
The Hospital Team services includes inpatient services such as inpatient Stroke Unit, rehab, general, cardiac, geriatric and respiratory medicine. Outpatient services include Out-patient Rehabilitation Therapy (OPRT) and the Transitional Aged Care Program (TACP).

The Bankstown Stuttering Unit is an internationally recognised specialist Speech Pathology service that aims to reduce the frequency and severity of stuttering. The Unit works closely with researchers from the Australian Stuttering Research Centre (based at Sydney University) and the linguistics department at Macquarie University, a partnership which is unique in the field of stuttering worldwide.

Student Unit
This department provides paediatric speech pathology services to children and adolescents aged 0 – 18 years. We assess, diagnose and treat children with difficulties in the areas of language, speech, fluency, voice, learning, feeding and swallowing. Intervention may be provided via a variety of service delivery models including: individual or group therapy, home programs and reviews.
Student Specific Facilities
The student unit at Hornsby Hospital comprises two therapy rooms, a student room equipped with computers, a printer and workspace area, as well as the Student Unit Supervisor’s office. Observation of the therapy rooms occurs via audiovisual equipment and sessions may be taped onto videotapes or DVD’s.
The student unit provides community based paediatric outpatient services to children in the Hornsby Kuring-gai area including those of CALD backgrounds.
Liverpool Health Service
The speech pathology department at Liverpool Hospital is part of the network of speech pathologists employed across Sydney South West Area Health Service. The department consists of an adult and paediatric team which services inpatient, outpatient and community clients of all ages.
The speech pathology department sees clients with communication and swallowing problems, often in a multi-disciplinary team setting.
As part of a tertiary teaching hospital for the South West Sydney area, we have specialist areas in:
- Cancer Therapy
- Brain Injury
- Stroke
- Aged Care
- Neo-natal Intensive Care
- Child Development
We are a growing department with new and innovative services which include a number of brokerage or specially funded positions such as Nursing Home projects, Communities for Children (C4C) and Links to School.
A range of service delivery models are used including:
- individual assessment and intervention
- joint or multi-disciplinary clinics
- group intervention
- capacity building models for school projects and target communities
As part of South West Sydney, Liverpool has a high culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population. Interpreters are often used and resources and interventions reflect the needs of the local community.
Quality projects are constantly undertaken and in the past we have:
- mapped assessment and intervention through Early Language Clinic
- analysed local demographic information and compared it with referral rates
- improved our triage of paediatric referrals
- investigated workplace safety, weekend services
- evaluated the use of a dysphagia screening tool
Our department is highly involved in the training of speech pathology staff, students, health professionals and the community. Students attending Liverpool Hospital have an opportunity to obtain a variety of clinical experiences and be involved in the day to day running of a busy large department.

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
The Royal Prince Alfred Speech Pathology Department has 7.42 FTE Speech Pathologists working in the following clinical areas:
- Critical Care
- Neurosciences
- Respiratory
- Cardiothoracics
- Aged Care
- Voice / ENT / Head & Neck
- General Medical
- Paediatric Feeding
- Stroke Outreach Service
- Day Hospital
They have recently established a new graduate position, which rotates between Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Concord Hospital.
The department sees patients for individual assessment and therapy, as well as outpatient communication groups and baby groups.
The department is actively involved in quality improvement, including the collection of outcome measures and clinical indicators; area wide research projects related to accent modification and communication in dementia; and resource development via area wide clinical networks.
Singapore General Hospital
Speech Therapy Department
Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is Singapore’s largest acute care tertiary hospital with about 1,500 acute beds. SGH has the most comprehensive range of clinical specialties available in Singapore with 28 clinical specialties under its roof. SGH also plays a major role in medical teaching and serves as a clinical teaching hospital for nurses and allied health professionals. Clinical research is also an integral part of our practice and is actively carried out by all departments.
The Speech Therapy Department at SGH provides speech therapy services in both inpatient and outpatient care, to both the adult and paediatric patient population. Speech Therapy services available at SGH include the following:
- Dysphagia Rehabilitation
- Neuro-Rehabilitation
- Management of Voice Disorders
- Head and Neck Rehabilitation
- Fluency Clinic
- Communication Disorders related to Cleft Lip/Palate and
Craniofacial Anomalies - Management of Developmental Speech and Language Disorders
The Speech Therapy Department at SGH is clinically and academically related to reputed Australian Universities; University of Sydney and La Trobe University. The department is actively involved in providing clinical placements for both the local and Australian Universities. A structured programme is in place for students and this programme has received much positive feedback from students over the years.

The Speech Pathology Department caters for adult neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders, individual and group service delivery models.
