Employment Prospects
Speech Pathologists work in a wide variety of settings. These include:
- Public and private hospitals including general hospitals and rehabilitation hospitals
- Public Community Health Centres
- Public Disability Services e.g. Department of Ageing Disability and Home Care (DADHC) in NSW
- Non Government Organisations e.g. The Spastic Centre
- Private Practice
- Public and Private Schools and Preschools
- Rural units
- Research units
Speech Pathologists’ salaries in the public sector, are covered by the NSW Health Services, Health Professionals (State) Award.
Details of the award can be found on the Health Department's website. New graduates commence on a salary of approximately $46,000pa according to this award.
International Employment
Speech Pathologists can gain employment in many countries outside Australia including New Zealand, United Kingdom, America, Canada, Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Middle East.
Clinical experience, post graduation in Australia, is required for employment in some countries.

Personal Attributes Required for a Successful Career
People wishing to become Speech Pathologists should have excellent communication skills, be interested in helping people and be willing to undertake ongoing studies in a profession which is continually changing to meet community needs.
The day to day work of a Speech Pathologist involves interacting with many different adults and children in a helpful, assertive, flexible, professional and caring manner.
In our experience, people whose own communication lacks flexibility and assertiveness may have difficulty completing speech pathology degrees.
Speech Pathologists need to be people-focused and able to consider the moral and ethical domains of practice as well as the technical and skilled based domains.
