How we teach

The Graduate Program in Sexual Health is offered in a flexible distance delivery mode, which is specially adapted for the needs of busy professionals.

Web based on-line learning:

The course work component of the Graduate Program in Sexual Health is offered largely on-line, in Blended E-Learning format (utilising the internet based Web CT learning platform). The Diploma and Masters courses have a one 2 week on-campus, face-to-face session and a sexual health placement. The Graduate Certificate can be done completely in distance mode on-line.

Face to face delivery:

The Graduate Certificate in Health Science (Sexual Health) will be also offered in a face-to-face on-campus mode dependant on sufficient number of applicants. This will be an opportunity for international students to experience the environment and culture of sexology and sexual health education in Australia. It will also cater to those students who prefer this mode of learning. The on-campus course will be offered in semester 2 (August to November)

Individualised learning:

The course coordinators recognize that the learning needs of individual students vary considerably. To this end, every applicant is interviewed by a member of the program team, and a personalised learning plan developed.

The 2 week on-campus session is compulsory for those students enrolled in the Diploma and Masters level courses. This session is offered at the end of semester 2 during the second semester (August-November). During this time, students are given the opportunity to discuss their training and career goals in interviews with the course coordinators.

The Sexual Health Placements of the students are also determined on an individual basis and programs developed to meet personal and professional needs.

What our students say about learning on-line:

"On Line learning has been interesting and the 'connection' with other students has been interesting. A little scarey at the beginning, but great once I really got into it."

"The lecturer was very involved and encouraging from a distance.... was it really from a distance? sometimes it felt even closer than a classroom lecturer..."

"The assessments were outstanding. They incorporated the theoretical and practical aspects of working with sexual function and dysfunction. They also tested our personal norms and opened our minds to different perspectives and methods of dealing with sexual function and dysfunction. The confidentiality of writing and submitting my comments on the web was great.

"Having all the readings available on-line was very useful. The web links were a way of keeping up with the latest."

Supervision of Research:

Research supervision is provided by face to face and email communication, and a monthly sex research [SEARCH] group meeting for collaboration and learning.

The purpose of the sex research group will be to:

  • Encourage students to share their personal research with other students and researchers.
  • Discuss common research problems/concerns.
  • Have organised sessions (as appropriate) on issues such as literature reviews, research methodology, ethics applications etc.
  • Meet with invited sexologists and consultants as relevant and appropriate
  • Develop external research grant application in collaboration with academics and external consultants.

Anyone in the field of sexuality and sexual health research who would like to attend this group is welcome to contact the of the Graduate Program in Sexual Health.
