Research support

To help our staff plan, develop and achieve their research goals, staff are encouraged to work with a mentor to devise a realistic program.

The Faculty also provides a range of resources and support programs to assist colleagues in building their research careers.

Funding schemes

Funding schemes include:

Health Sciences Research Grants
This scheme is currently suspended.
The Health Sciences Research Grant Scheme is designed to support the development of research track records by Faculty staff with the aim of expediting preparation of competitive external research grant applications.

Faculty Financial Support Scheme
This scheme is currently suspended.
To facilitate research grant applications faculty financial support is available to the 1st named Chief Investigator to facilitate submission and maximise the success of applications to NHMRC/ARC and other Category 1 grants. For resubmission of unsuccessful grants, applicants may seek up to half the support.

Conference Travel Support Scheme
In general, academic staff members are expected to use grant monies and other funds/allowances available to them to finance their conference participation. However, academics, particularly early career researchers, who do not have access to alternative funding sources may request financial assistance under this scheme.

Applicants must be part of a scientific organising committee and/or present a research conference paper or poster that meets the definitions outlined by DEST in their HERDC Specifications.

Applicants must also undertake to publish their conference presentation in a DEST acceptable journal.

Research Infrastructure Equipment Grant Scheme
FHS Research Infrastructure Equipment Grants are intended to support, on a competitive basis, the purchase of a single item of equipment (or a complete system). Successful applicants will demonstrate how the funding will lead to productivity gains for the Faculty.

Early Career Excellence in Research Awards (teaching relief program)
This scheme is currently suspended.
Early career researchers (ECRs) often report that they find it difficult to develop their research due to heavy teaching and administrative loads. This scheme is designed to support ECRs who have demonstrated excellence and research leadership by providing them with teaching relief for one or two semesters (i.e. a maximum of one year) to achieve specific research objectives.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to reduce their teaching load by up to a maximum of 40% FTE and will be expected to deliver specific research outcomes (initiation of research projects, publications, grants).

Professional development opportunities and training programs

The Faculty also offers professional development opportunities and training programs such as:

Research Advice Team
The Faculty Research Advice Team provides advice and assistance to staff and research students in research design and data analysis. As well as support in statistical analysis and various quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the team offers support in the design of data collection instrumentation and equipment adaptation.

Mentorship, research career advice, and team participation
To help our staff plan, develop and achieve their research goals, staff are encouraged to work with a mentor to devise a realistic program. For example the NHMRC grant program where senior researchers work with less experienced researchers to improve their grant development and preparation skills.

RHD student supervision training and professional development
Supervisor workshops, ITL course.
