Research Advice Team
The Faculty Research Advice Team is intended to provide advice and assistance to staff and research students in the design and analysis of research projects. It is a development of the old Statistics Support Clinic. The Team provides support in statistics, but also in a range of other forms of research.
Advice and assistance are free, but there are conditions. Please read.
The team members listed below are all volunteers, known for their patience, and are keen supporters of research in the Faculty. Please contact a team member who can offer help in the area you need. If in doubt contact Rob Heard.
ANITA BUNDY
Anita offers assistance in Rasch analysis, especially with Winsteps or Facets. contact
LINDY CLEMSON
Lindy offers assistance in particular, the development of study design, including those with mixed methodologies. She has background in both quantitative and qualitative approaches. She also has expertise in Rasch analysis useful for instrument development and validation and can handle some of the more basic statistical analysis using SPSS (t tests, relative risks). contact
MARK HALAKI
Mark offers assistance with t-tests, ANOVAs, experimental quantitative design (prior to data collection), Excel (spreadsheet and graphs), Matlab (data analysis advice/programming) contact
ROB HEARD
Rob offers assistance with quantitative research designs and analyses using ANOVA and regression. contact
ZAKIA HOSSAIN
Zakia offers assistance with questionnaire design, Chi-square test, ANOVA and regression, demographic techniques, and preparation of human ethics applications. contact
ROSE LEONTINI
Offers assistance in qualitative methods for social science research, drawing on sociological and anthropological theory to develop study design and for analysing data.
Her expertise includes document analysis, secondary data analysis, and in-depth interviews.
Offers assistance with content analysis and narrative analysis, particularly relevant to qualitative methods in the health care context.
Can advise on the design of individual and team projects; appropriate methods for recruitment of informants relative to the study objectives, including sampling; negotiating informant participation in data analysis and findings. contact
MARK MATHEWS
Mark offers assistance with direct observation of behaviour and individual subject research design questions. contact
KAREN PEPPER
Karen offers assistance in quantitative research & statistical analysis with SPSS, including research designs that can be analysed using techniques such as:
* t-tests & confidence intervals.
* Analysis of variance (ANOVA), including variants such as multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) & analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
* Correlation & regression, including variants such as linear, multiple & logistic regression.
* Non-parametric statistics.
* Relative risk & odds ratios.

RUSSELL SHUTTLEWORTH
Russell offers assistance in Qualitative research methods (participant-observation, in-depth interviews, documentary methods). Qualitative research methodologies generally but especially ethnography, life history and grounded theory. Theoretical influences include various interpretive and critical theories. contact
ROGER STANCLIFFE
Roger offers assistance in quantitative analyses using SPSS - non-parametric statistics and procedures such as t-test, ANOVA/ANCOVA, linear regression, logistic regression. His approach is to respond to requests as they come in and negotiate a mutually convenient meeting time. He finds it helpful to talk with people before they have collected (much) data rather than find problems too late. contact
