Research and Innovation
As a research institution, one of the University of Sydney's core activities is the creation and transmission of knowledge through research and through the education and training of postgraduate research students. This focus is rewarded by outstanding performance.
The University leads the country in the funding it receives for research from the Australian Research Council, receiving $13.62 million for new research in the 2001 round of grants - $4 million more than its nearest competitor, the University of Melbourne. Medical researchers also secured 16 per cent of the total funding for research grants distributed by the National Health and Medical Research Council.
At the same time, the University won 20 of 100 new ARC research fellowships - more than any other university including the traditional frontrunner, the Australian National University, which won 16.
The University emphasises postgraduate research - not only does it have the largest cohort of research higher degree students in the country, but it also has the highest number of research degree completions.
Sydney also has strong collaborative links with business and industry. The various Departments and Schools within the University help to co-ordinate experience with business and industry where research interests of the postgraduate student require it. From these experiences, research students have found high levels of employment success upon graduation or have attained further professional development through the University by way of Fellowship and Post Doctoral research schemes.
