Medical Sonography

About Medical Ultrasonography

The Sonographer is a specialist health science professional in the field of medical diagnostic ultrasound. Using specialised equipment the sonographer performs examinations of patients to image internal tissues and structures.

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves emitted by a device called a transducer. Echoes are detected as these sound waves reflect from internal tissues and structures within the patient. The echoes are converted to electrical signals which are used to form images of the internal organs. These are displayed on a monitor for instant viewing and recorded digitally or photographically for subsequent use.

Diagnostic ultrasound is used in nearly all specialities of medicine. Perhaps the best known use is in the field of Obstetrics. This application includes the estimation of the age of the foetus, detection of multiple pregnancies and checking for abnormalities. Ultrasound plays an equally important role in nearly all other specialities where both normal and abnormal tissues and structures in the body can be identified and examined.

Diagnostic ultrasound has now become essential in patient management. With rapid developing technologies and new applications constantly being implemented.

Course overview

The Postgraduate Sonography Program is designed for health professionals employed in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. The program offers an articulated pathway through the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters awards in Sonography.

In addition, the program conducts regular seminars and workshops for continuing professional development.

Graduate Certificate

While this course will not lead to sonographer accreditation, it may suit those with specific interests or requirements in diagnostic ultrasound. Full credit for subjects studied in the Graduate Certificate can be gained if subsequent progression to the Graduate Diploma is sought.

Graduate Diploma

The Graduate Diploma of Health Science (Medical Sonography) offers a specialist program in the professional area of diagnostic ultrasound. The course provides participants with a core of knowledge and skills appropriate for the professional practice of medical sonography. The course focuses on the needs of sonographers and provides a sound education in physics and instrumentation, professional issues encountered in the field of sonography and a wide variety of applications of general (PDF) and vascular (PDF) sonography. The duration of the course is two years and is offered in off-campus mode with on-campus blocks. Completion of this fully accredited course leads to accreditation as an Accredited Medical Sonographer (AMS).

Masters Program

The Masters in Health Science (Medical Sonography) offers participants with the Graduate Diploma (or equivalent), the opportunity to develop specialist skills in areas of interest in The Masters in Health Science (Medical Sonography) offers participants with the Graduate Diploma (or equivalent), the opportunity to develop specialist skills in areas of interest in clinical sonography and/or research. The focus of the Masters year is a significant project in the field of sonography. This project is supported by a wide choice of elective subjects. There are no compulsory attendances for the masters year, except where required by electives chosen. Entry requirements as per the Graduate Diploma. Options are available to allow an upgrade to the Master (PDF) program.
