Professor Johanna Westbrook

Johanna Westbrook joined The University of Sydney in November 2006 as Professor of Health Informatics in the Faculty of Health Sciences in order to establish the Health Informatics Research & Evaluation Unit. Prior to this she was Professor of Health Informatics in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of NSW, where she was also Deputy Director of the Centre for Health Informatics.

Johanna’s research interests and expertise centre on evaluation of the impact that clinical information systems have on health care delivery, health professionals’ work and patient outcomes. She leads the largest health informatics evaluation research team in Australia and the group’s work is highly competitive with other international research teams in this area. The team’s work centres on designing innovative, multi-method approaches and applying these in order to measure how effective clinical information technology is at delivering desired benefits and in improving the quality and safety of health care. A unique aspect of the team’s work is the application of rigorous evaluation approaches which bring together highly quantitative methods grounded in epidemiological techniques married with the use of qualitative approaches including techniques such as video observational studies and social network analyses.

Professor Westbrook has undertaken a substantial body of research centred on the use of online evidence systems. This includes the first international population study of clinicians’ use of online evidence and its integration into, and impact on, decision-making and work practices. She has also led studies in the use of telemedicine applications in Emergency department settings. She is currently leading a number of research projects funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to examine the impact of order entry, decision support and medication management systems in hospitals on the efficiency of care delivery, medication error rates, and health professionals’ work and communication patterns. She is supported by an NHMRC Fellowship.

Professor Westbrook has published many papers on health care evaluations and health technology assessments as well as epidemiological studies. She has qualifications in epidemiology, health information management and health administration, has over 140 refereed publications and has attracted in excess of $17M in research funding. In 2005 Professor Westbrook was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. Only two other Australians have received this honour. She has received several awards for her research work, as well as a national award for the innovative use of technology in tertiary education.
