Bachelor of Health Science (Health Information Management)
Master of Health Science (Health Informatics)

What attracted you to Health Information Management?
The course provides many opportunities to move into a wide range of diverse and interesting areas of employment within Information Communication Technologies (ICT) not only limited to Health . Another major factor was the security in knowing that there would be many jobs on offer once my degree was completed. The financial rewards on offer were very attractive and continue to outstrip those offered by other professions.

What kind of work does your position involve?
The purpose of my position is to prepare solution and detailed designs and monitor architectural compliance for initiatives detailed in the NSW Health ICT Strategic Plan. This includes redesigning work practices, identifying supporting technology and configuring technology solutions, to align with the target architecture, maximizing the contribution of information communication technology to high quality health care and an efficient health system.

The scope of work allows me to have central role in the design and/or compliance of NSW Health enterprise systems such as the Electronic Health Record (EHR), Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Corporate System Program as well as providing feedback into National initiatives such as National e-Health Transitional Authority programs.

What is the best aspect of your current job?
Without a doubt, involvement in health Informatics. Health Informatics in Australia has grown considerably as part of the so-called information explosion which has seen the convergence of computer, communication and information technology and health care. This is evidenced by developments including the NSW Health EHR and EMR. Being part of this evolving and growing profession in this period change is challenging but also exciting and immensely rewarding.

What are your future career goals?
Medium term - complete work on the development of key NSW Health solutions such as the Electronic Health Record and Electronic Medical Record.
Long term - move away from Health and further broaden experience in other industries both government and private.
