Professional and clinical experience requirements

NSW Health Department requirements

You may be required to complete clinical training in the NSW hospital system as part of your course. While undertaking that training, you will be subject to guidelines and procedures laid down for health workers in the system by the NSW Department of Health. These include criminal record checks and health issues relating to infectious diseases, such as HIV and Hepatitis B virus (HBV). If you are unable to satisfy the guidelines and procedures because of your health status or for other reasons, you may be unable to complete their clinical training and studies.

For a description of clinical education and requirements in each Discipline, see the clinical education chapter in the Faculty of Health Sciences handbook.

Below are some requirements you might need to meet before undertaking clinical experience:

  • Medical and Vaccinations
Some courses of study are associated with health risks, but those risks can be minimised by taking certain precautions.
  • Criminal Records Checks
For any students who undertake clinical experience, a criminal records check is required by the NSW Health Department and must be completed at enrolment. You will receive the appropriate form as part of your enrolment package. For further information see the NSW Department of Health Policy on Employment Screening using Criminal Record Checks (PDF).
  • NSW Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act
All students undertaking 'child-related' placements as part of their course are subject to the requirements of the NSW Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act. Prior to undertaking clinical placement, students must return a signed copy of the Prohibited Employment Declaration to Student Administration. For details, see NSW Commission for Children and Young People working with children check. At enrolment, you will need to complete the Working With Children Check - Consent Form. (PDF)
  • NSW Health Privacy Management Plan
Students undertaking clinical placements must be familiar with the content of this Plan and comply with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998. For further information, see the NSW Department of Health Privacy Management Plan (PDF).
