This program of research in social gerontology is oriented around a common set of theoretical, methodological and practical reference points, thereby enabling cumulative insights to be generated from a series of projects over more than 20 years. It has two main empirical foci: the ‘ageing experience’ in different social settings, and the 'care environment' for older people who are approaching or experiencing frailty. Overall, the program aims to:
* develop a conceptual framework for the description and analysis of quality of life in old age
* extend and refine the contribution of qualitative research methodology to the study of ageing
* inform public policy, professional practice and service development from a ‘bottom up’ perspective
